Permanent Installation of Tesserae Mosaic in Asian Motif
I recently completed this very large mosaic project which covers the risers on two staircases, an entrance foyer medallion, and approximately 100 square feet of flooring. There is a definite Asian flavor to the project. The entrance foyer medallion, inset in hardwood flooring, is a yin-yang design made from black granite and white marble. The upper staircase is of broken china, river pebbles, shells, irredescent stained glass tiles, broken pottery, hand-painted ceramic tiles, pieces of jewelry, and various other 'found' objects. The ribbons of color 'drip' down from one step to the next. The streams end on the bottom step with a sand-colored 'beach' area including shells. Oriental 'Blue Willow' china pieces are highlighted, as are painted tiles with koi and water themes. The flooring repeats the fishpond motif. Many green lilly pads, three orange, black, and white koi, and three pink water lillies are pictured amid blue and turquoise streams of water. Whole sand-colored ceramic tiles in various sizes and shades are used in the background. The lower staircase section is styled a bit differently, but continues with the overall theme using shells, river stones, etc. On the very bottom step, the Hatteras lighthouse is pictured with a beam of white irredescent light from stained glass squares. This was a very time-consuming project of which I am extremely proud. It was my first effort at tiling!
